How do I dispute an unauthorised debit order in South Africa?
Contact your bank as soon as you spot the debit and instruct it to dispute and reverse the debit order. Recent unauthorised debit orders can usually be reversed quickly through your bank's app, call centre, or branch, while older ones may require the bank to investigate the mandate first. A sworn affidavit stating that you never signed the debit order mandate strengthens the dispute, and you can also place a stop payment against the reference.

Report the fraud to your bank's fraud department immediately so the account or card can be blocked and the funds traced, then open a SAPS case and get a CAS number. If you are unhappy with the bank's decision, escalate to the National Financial Ombud Scheme free of charge.
