Do both parents need to give consent for a child's passport in South Africa?
Yes. The Department of Home Affairs requires the consent of both parents (or all legal guardians) for a minor's passport application, in line with the parental responsibilities and rights recognised under the Children's Act 38 of 2005. Where a parent cannot appear in person at the Home Affairs office, a sworn affidavit of consent is commonly used, and similar consent requirements apply when a minor travels internationally with only one parent or with another adult.
Can an affidavit of consent be revoked after it is signed?
Generally yes, unless the consent has already been relied upon or is tied to a contract. To revoke, provide written notice of revocation to the person or institution holding the consent, ideally also in the form of a sworn affidavit. Including an expiry date in the original affidavit is the simplest way to limit how long your consent remains valid.
